REFINING SHAPE. RESTORING PROPORTION, IMPROVING BALANCE.
A refined, individualised approach to otoplasty, ear reduction, earlobe repair and reconstructive ear surgery.
REFINING SHAPE. RESTORING PROPORTION. IMPROVING BALANCE.
The ears are a relatively small part of the face, yet their size, shape, projection and symmetry can have a significant influence on overall facial balance.
For some patients, prominent or disproportionately large ears can draw attention away from the face. Others may be concerned by asymmetry, an enlarged earlobe, a torn piercing or changes following trauma or previous surgery.
Ear surgery is therefore not one single operation.
Depending upon the individual concern, treatment may involve:
To correct prominent or protruding ears.
To reduce the overall size or height of the external ear.
To reconstruct an earlobe damaged by piercing, jewellery or trauma.
To reduce an enlarged or elongated earlobe and restore better proportion.
EXPERIENCE THAT EXTENDS BEYOND COSMETIC OTOPLASTY.
Mr Mattine’s experience in ear surgery includes dedicated training in total ear reconstruction.
He undertook a fellowship in France with Françoise Firmin, internationally recognised for her pioneering work in ear reconstruction, and spent a year developing experience in the reconstruction of complex congenital and acquired ear deformities.
This background provides a detailed understanding of the three-dimensional architecture of the ear, cartilage shape, projection and the relationship between individual components of the pinna.
That reconstructive experience also influences Mr Mattine’s approach to cosmetic ear surgery.
Rather than simply moving the ear closer to the head, the objective is to understand why the ear is prominent, asymmetric or disproportionate and to correct the underlying anatomy.
DEEP KNOWLEDGE. INDIVIDUAL JUDGEMENT. NATURAL RESULTS.
Ear surgery may be appropriate for patients who:
The objective is not simply to make the ears smaller or closer to the head.
It is to understand the underlying anatomy and create a more natural relationship between ear size, shape, projection and the rest of the face.

Otoplasty, also known as pinnaplasty, is designed to improve the position and shape of prominent ears.
Ear prominence is usually caused by one or both of two anatomical features:
underdevelopment or absence of the antihelical fold
excessive depth or prominence of the conchal bowl
In many patients, both abnormalities are present. A simple ‘ear-pinning’ procedure may bring the ear closer to the head without fully addressing these underlying structural causes.
Mr Mattine uses a combined anatomical approach, tailoring the operation to the individual ear and correcting the components responsible for the prominence.
Depending upon the anatomy, this may involve:
recreating or strengthening the antihelical fold
reshaping the cartilage
reducing excessive conchal prominence
repositioning the ear closer to the head
using internal sutures to maintain the new contour
combining cartilage modification with suture techniques
By treating the structural cause rather than simply pulling the ear backwards, the aim is to achieve a more natural contour and greater long-term stability, while minimising the risk of recurrence.
